When Your Home is Your Office …
For whatever reason, you have decided that you are giving up your routine of going to the office and you are going to work from home. In today’s world, with the advent of the Internet and the development of telecommunications, working outside the office is becoming more and more common. For many stay-at-home moms with young children, this has become an ideal way to earn a living while looking after their little ones rather than wasting vast sums on childcare. Many single parents are turning to home working because it is their best option to support their families without having to compromise on being with their children. And many employers are pleased to employ part-time workers from home as this can cut down on salary expenses and the cost of running an office.
If you are lucky, you will have a spare room in your house that you can convert into your own office. But many home workers do not have that luxury and do not have the funds to create their own office. Some people work from their bedrooms and others from their living rooms.
So what is the best and most cost-effective way to turn your bedroom into your office without it losing its principal look or function as a bedroom?
First of all, depending on the size of your room, find a separate corner, away from your bed, where you can put a desk and/or computer table. Your computer table can be second hand. The most important thing is that it is stable enough to support your computer. If it is a little scratched or stained, you can always cover it in the contact paper that suits your taste.
If your house gets hot in the summer and you can’t afford to run or install an air conditioner, at the very least you need to have a good fan. This is because you need to be comfortable while you are working, otherwise it will be impossible to concentrate. Conversely, use a small fan heater in the winter to help you keep warm.
Invest in a good straight-backed chair if you are spending long hours on the computer. Your back needs to be supported properly.
Install a set of shelves or drawers for items associated with your work. Never keep your work items with your clothes and personal belongings, as you will not be able to keep track of your things properly. If funds are really tight, a set of plastic drawers or simple wooden shelves are good enough.
As you are sitting in the room most of the day, make it look more cheerful by adding some color. Soft tropical area rugs can provide a touch of color, or maybe you would prefer solid color area rugs. These will add some vitality to your room and make you feel more comfortable as you will have somewhere soft to put your feet.
A vase of fresh flowers can also give some life and fragrance to your room, as can pretty curtains matching your rug. And of course, keeping everything as tidy and as uncluttered as you can will go a long way to keeping your bedroom/office looking good and being a pleasant place to work in.
