Deciding where you are going to put your home office may be the hardest step. If you have made the decision to work at home, you need to make sure that you have a space to work. It’s too hard and complicated to have an office space where you constantly have to move things around because the space is used for more than just your office. You need a space to call your own and to be able to walk away from it after you are done.

Simple home office design

Every home office design is different for everyone. It depends on what you will be doing and how often you will be working as to how you will design your office. You need to make sure that your office space has everything you need to feel comfortable and at home, yet productive and inspired.

Designing Your Office

Once you have decided where you are going to put your home office it’s time to design it. You need to find a place for your desk that doesn’t have you facing away from the window nor directly facing it. You need to make sure that your desk area gets enough light.

If possible, start with an empty room that you can design that will work for you. For example, if you have a walk in closet that you are transforming to a home office you need to make sure that all the clothes are taken out of the closet. You don’t want to work in between outfits. Before you place any furniture in the closet, you will need to design a plan on paper to map out where everything will go. If you need some shelves put up or new lighting do that before you place your furniture in the room. Your plan should include any wall petitions or electrical outlets that you will need.

Before you move any of the furniture in, you need to make a list of all the supplies you need to make your business run smoothly. If you don’t know what you need to run your business then do a search online to find out. You can also start with the basics and buy as you need the equipment or supplies.

Move In

Once your room is ready, you can begin moving in your office equipment according to your design. Keep to the design that you created on the plan. Start with the large items first like furniture first, equipment second, and office supplies last.

Working on a room corner

Now you need to accessorize your office. Hang up a bulletin board to place important memos or appointments you must memorize. Add family photos to your decor and make sure that the room is decorated to please you and no one else.

Floors

Add the finishing touches to your new home office. Place rectangle rugs down in front of your desk and at your feet. Place shag rugs down under your desk and where you will be standing a lot for added comfort while you are working.

Remember, you can always rearrange your office when you get comfortable in your new location and know where you want everything.

Yellow is a bright and beautiful color no matter where you see it. Yellow is also a color that you can decorate your home with. Yellow comes in many different shades from pale butter to bright sunshine and can work well with other colors and shades however; you still need to blend them accurately in order to have a balanced look.

When decorating with yellow, try using it as a main color in one room of your home and then highlight it in the rest of the rooms. This will give you an even look to your home and it will feel bright and comfortable.

European Style

If you want to use yellow on the walls, try a European style tile. You can purchase these tiles in a bright yellow and then combine them with brown tones, blue tones or even red tones. This look will go perfect in the bathroom for several reasons. Bathrooms with tile walls are easy to clean and the color can also make your bathroom seem brighter or larger in size.

Yellow living room European style

Formal Living Room

If you want a formal look in your living room then try adding yellow curtains to your windows. You can also place yellow on the walls but you need to make sure that the curtains and the paint on the walls are close to the same color. You can accessorize your living room with brown tones to complete the look. Wall art and mirrors framed in dark wood will be fine. You can also add color by choosing lampshades that are white, brown, or even red. Throw pillows can be the same color as your lampshades. You can also place yellow rugs down on the floor. These area rugs should go under the furniture a little bit so they can help the furniture to blend in with the decor.

Yellow curtain

You can also choose a soft yellow tone in your living room and accent it in white. This is a more formal look and is a soft shade so you can relax and unwind. After finding the right yellow shade for the walls, paint the trim white. You can accessorize with throw pillows and lamps that have a light blue color in them. Your three main colors would be soft yellow, white, and light blue.

A Bold kitchen

Now is the time to spruce things up in your kitchen. If you have always played it safe in the kitchen when it comes to decor, try something new. Primary blue is a bold color and yet it seems to go well with yellow. Paint the kitchen cabinets primary blue and trim them in white. Then use yellow accessories to blend in with the blue. Try yellow and white floor tiles or linoleum on the floors. This is a great way to get a balance between the two colors and the role of the yellow becomes the accessorizing color and not the main color.

You can also use yellow in flowers to complete the look in any room. A bouquet of flowers, whether they are real or artificial, is not only beautiful but it is a necessity.

For whatever reason, you have decided that you are giving up your routine of going to the office and you are going to work from home. In today’s world, with the advent of the Internet and the development of telecommunications, working outside the office is becoming more and more common. For many stay-at-home moms with young children, this has become an ideal way to earn a living while looking after their little ones rather than wasting vast sums on childcare. Many single parents are turning to home working because it is their best option to support their families without having to compromise on being with their children. And many employers are pleased to employ part-time workers from home as this can cut down on salary expenses and the cost of running an office.

If you are lucky, you will have a spare room in your house that you can convert into your own office. But many home workers do not have that luxury and do not have the funds to create their own office. Some people work from their bedrooms and others from their living rooms.

So what is the best and most cost-effective way to turn your bedroom into your office without it losing its principal look or function as a bedroom?

First of all, depending on the size of your room, find a separate corner, away from your bed, where you can put a desk and/or computer table. Your computer table can be second hand. The most important thing is that it is stable enough to support your computer. If it is a little scratched or stained, you can always cover it in the contact paper that suits your taste.

If your house gets hot in the summer and you can’t afford to run or install an air conditioner, at the very least you need to have a good fan. This is because you need to be comfortable while you are working, otherwise it will be impossible to concentrate. Conversely, use a small fan heater in the winter to help you keep warm.

Invest in a good straight-backed chair if you are spending long hours on the computer. Your back needs to be supported properly.

Install a set of shelves or drawers for items associated with your work. Never keep your work items with your clothes and personal belongings, as you will not be able to keep track of your things properly. If funds are really tight, a set of plastic drawers or simple wooden shelves are good enough.

As you are sitting in the room most of the day, make it look more cheerful by adding some color. Soft tropical area rugs can provide a touch of color, or maybe you would prefer solid color area rugs. These will add some vitality to your room and make you feel more comfortable as you will have somewhere soft to put your feet.

A vase of fresh flowers can also give some life and fragrance to your room, as can pretty curtains matching your rug. And of course, keeping everything as tidy and as uncluttered as you can will go a long way to keeping your bedroom/office looking good and being a pleasant place to work in.

Although the 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s brought on the best in home decor, the 80’s was a wonderful era in home decor as well. The 80’s was boldly classified by the fluorescent lighting that dropped from the ceiling, the oak cabinets and the thick tile countertops. The 80’s brought about large changes compared to the decades before. The main colors were salmon and light blue.

80's home decor

If you want to decorate your kitchen or living room in the 80’s decor you can do it without costing you a lot of money. This look was not only simple but it was also affordable. When preparing your home for the 80’s, here are some tips to help you.

The kitchen is the best place to start with your 80’s decor. You want to start with the cabinet doors. They may be a plain and simple stain but you can turn them into the colorful 80’s cabinet by using the colors of salmon with light blue or a dark green. You can also match gray with mauve or cream with mauve.

80's kitchen design

Take off the brass doorknobs and cabinet handles. They can be replaced with brushed nickel knobs and handles. In fact, you may want to change the handles and knobs first before you paint because this may be all you need to do. If you do need to paint, take your doors off and take them outside or away from the cabinets so you don’t create a mess.

Tiled countertops are easy to clean and they look great but now they are made with some safe ingredients. Look for granite tile because it not only cost less but you cannot see that grout line that is so hard to keep clean. You want to have a clean look in your kitchen at all times. These countertops will give that to you.

Granite tile kitchen countertop

You want to add one or two drop down fluorescent lights but you can also use recessed lighting in several different ways. These lights are easy to do yourself or you can hire someone to put them in for you. Lighting, that goes under the cabinet is also popular and can mount easily with just a simple screwdriver. You want to have enough lighting in your room so if needed you can place lamps down at different places to light up every corner of your room.

The flooring in the 80’s was simple and it included comfort. Add white area rugs or green area rugs to your floor to get the right look. Color coordinate your area rugs in the kitchen with the rest of your decor. For the living room, you can add these same color rugs in front of the television or sofa so that they are highlighted. Area rugs can be purchased in several different colors.

The 80’s look was simple and not something that you can just buy from the store; it needs to be created. Every room in your home can have an 80’s look or you can keep this special look in the kitchen and/or the living room.

The ancient Chinese art of interior decorating known as Feng Shui is a complex system based on mathematical formulas that takes a long time to learn. However, some of its basic principles can be adapted for any home decorating style or method to give a room a positive mood and energy. These two ideas are color and flow.

Colors can have strong effects on people and these effects can even differ from person to person. What’s more, different shades of colors can have radically different effects on people’s moods. For example, think of the area rugs in a living room or family room. Imagine first that room has formal silk oriental rugs in red and black. Then think of the room with polypropylene rugs in bright colors. What kinds of emotional impressions do you get from each scene? These are examples of how color, and in this case form as well, influence people’s moods.

Living room in soft color

Common concepts about colors say that dark colors are depressing; light colors uplifting and extreme colors aggravating. But what about people who find dark colors restful, while light colors annoy them and extreme colors exhilarate them? The best way to determine how certain colors affect you is merely to pay attention to how various colors make you feel, such as in people’s homes or workplaces. Make note of how you feel as you encounter these colors and their shades, especially if you have a particularly strong response to one.

Colors also affect how people relate to one another, so always pay close attention to how people interact in a room. For example, if people always seem to get into arguments in the dining room, take a closer look at the colors in that room. Studies have shown that bright or extreme colors can irritate people’s eyes and raise their metabolism, making them more aggressive. Color isn’t the only thing that influences personal interactions, but paying attention may point out its subtle influence.

Colorful cozy living room

Meanwhile, flow is one of the most basic concepts of Feng Shui, since the art’s ultimate goal is to maximize the flow of positive life force (“chi”) in a room. Few people are so sensitive to chi that they can detect a space’s essential energy. However, with a little practice many home decorators can improve a feeling of flow by noticing the way people and objects move through a space.

A room’s flow is in its essence. This means there should be easy access for people as they move around the room as well as enter and exit it. This kind of flow is a mixture of organization and design that focuses on removing blockages and allowing easy movement through every area. To find a room’s flow, walk into it and stop. Try to sense the tiny currents of air that run through every space. As you become more sensitive to the room’s subtleties, you should be able to sense greater and lesser air currents moving around the space, which will translate into areas of greater or lesser flow.

Finally, don’t be afraid to experiment with these basic principles of Feng Shui, and to be wrong sometimes. We always learn more from our mistakes than from our success. Feng Shui itself was originally based on trial and error, so it’s all right to make mistakes. Try to simply live with the space for a while, and after time, you’ll feel more confident in making changes that will correct your errors and enhance the living space. That after all, is the ultimate goal in Feng Shui.

When you get tired of the same old decor, you may think of ways that you would like to redecorate your room but you don’t want to make such drastic changes when you haven’t thought it out enough. Redecorating can be very expensive but as long as you keep track of your expenses and if you set yourself a budget you should be able to keep the cost down and get as much done as you wanted.

If you are not sure what look you want to go with, consider going with a look that will not cost you a lot of money and will help you achieve a new style all at the same time. Change your accessories first. Your accessories include the curtains, pillows, or area rugs on the floor. You may go from brown rugs to yellow rugs. This gives you the freedom to change enough of your room decor for people to ask, “Did you do something to this room?” You will not only impress people because they will think that you spent hours on a new look but you don’t have a lot of expense in the change of decor.

Lighting idea for modern living room

You can change the lighting in the room to create a new look. Lighting comes in different forms from ceiling lighting to track lighting. You can completely change the look of the room by adding or taking away light. If you haven’t already installed them, consider placing up studio lights that can be adjusted to highlight a particular area in your room or to highlight the focal point you have chosen for the room. There are many other ways to add lighting or take away lighting to make the room seem different. Hanging a light above a chair in the corner will not only make it easy to sit in that chair and read but it will also make the room seem larger all together because you are increasing the feel of that corner. It no longer looks like a small dark corner that no one wants to sit on.

Green window curtain style

Curtains are also important in a room. You may have dark lined panels for the winter and sheers or lace for your summer curtains. However, it may be time to spend a little bit of money and create an elegant or sophisticated look on your windows to give your room a redecorated feel to it. Most homeowners find a look that they like and then they don’t want to change it. When you are looking at your window in the middle of summer and you have lined panels on then its time for a change.

Redecorating is the same as anything else you go to redo. Its’ redoing a look to make it look and feel different. It may be as simple as changing your coasters or it may require 90% of your room to change. Before you make any changes, go over your style that you have now and then go over your new style to make sure that it will work.

Although the Victorian look is old fashioned it is also sophisticated and still looks great in homes today. Whether you want to do your complete home in Victorian style or you just want to create one Victorian styled room, the look is easy to create and you probably already have some items that can fit into the decor.

The Victorian look came about when Queen Victoria ruled. Decorating the home in a sophisticated look was very important to the social class. It had a rich look to it and it made those who didn’t have a lot of money look like they did. The furniture was very expensive and the accessories were high class as well. Together this created an upscale home decor that was considered the Victorian style.

Now you want to have the Victorian look in your home and that is going to be easy for you to create. Remember, it was about looking sophisticated whether you had money or not. You can create this same look with just a little planning. Here are some tips to help you get the Victorian look.

Walls

The Victorian style walls used vivid colors like ruby, emerald green, and sapphire blue to create the right look. You don’t have to stick to just one color; you can use a combination of colors as long as they are vivid colors. Light shades should be avoided completely in the main rooms of a Victorian style house.

Victorian style living-room with wallpaper

Wallpaper became very popular in the Victorian error. If your room is small then add small patterned wallpaper to your walls. If your rooms are large then consider large patterned wallpaper instead. It’s okay to use floral print wallpaper, or wallpaper with butterflies, birds, or paper fans. You can get almost any Victorian design in a wallpaper but you need to make sure that you have a balanced look when you are done. Wallpaper is not something that you can remove easily.

When you use wallpaper, find a border that will match the wallpaper design. If you have a lot of design in your wallpaper consider adding a solid print border to help create balance in the room.

Flooring

The Victorian design carried on to the floor as well as the walls. Use hardwood flooring whenever possible and compliment the look with oriental rugs. These rugs come in an array of designs, colors, sizes, and shapes so you are bound to find one that you are satisfied with. It’s okay to use more than one oriental rug in the same room. It depends on how large the room is and if you want the room to look divided. This Victorian style looks wonderful in older styled homes where most of the old-fashioned fixtures, including the floors and doors are still in tact and useable. Cotton rugs or other washable rugs are also perfect for the Victorian style.

Oriental rug compliments hardwood flooring

The furniture is dark wood and includes the more expensive kind like Mahogany, rosewood and more. Finish the Victorian look in every room using white colored bed sheets, laces, embroidery, and decorations with ribbons.
