Although the 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s brought on the best in home decor, the 80’s was a wonderful era in home decor as well. The 80’s was boldly classified by the fluorescent lighting that dropped from the ceiling, the oak cabinets and the thick tile countertops. The 80’s brought about large changes compared to the decades before. The main colors were salmon and light blue.

If you want to decorate your kitchen or living room in the 80’s decor you can do it without costing you a lot of money. This look was not only simple but it was also affordable. When preparing your home for the 80’s, here are some tips to help you.

The kitchen is the best place to start with your 80’s decor. You want to start with the cabinet doors. They may be a plain and simple stain but you can turn them into the colorful 80’s cabinet by using the colors of salmon with light blue or a dark green. You can also match gray with mauve or cream with mauve.

Take off the brass doorknobs and cabinet handles. They can be replaced with brushed nickel knobs and handles. In fact, you may want to change the handles and knobs first before you paint because this may be all you need to do. If you do need to paint, take your doors off and take them outside or away from the cabinets so you don’t create a mess.

Tiled countertops are easy to clean and they look great but now they are made with some safe ingredients. Look for granite tile because it not only cost less but you cannot see that grout line that is so hard to keep clean. You want to have a clean look in your kitchen at all times. These countertops will give that to you.

You want to add one or two drop down fluorescent lights but you can also use recessed lighting in several different ways. These lights are easy to do yourself or you can hire someone to put them in for you. Lighting, that goes under the cabinet is also popular and can mount easily with just a simple screwdriver. You want to have enough lighting in your room so if needed you can place lamps down at different places to light up every corner of your room.

The flooring in the 80’s was simple and it included comfort. Add white area rugs or green area rugs to your floor to get the right look. Color coordinate your area rugs in the kitchen with the rest of your decor. For the living room, you can add these same color rugs in front of the television or sofa so that they are highlighted. Area rugs can be purchased in several different colors.

The 80’s look was simple and not something that you can just buy from the store; it needs to be created. Every room in your home can have an 80’s look or you can keep this special look in the kitchen and/or the living room.

I need cabinet and draws for my 80′s kitchen. I’m selling my home and can’t find the same cabinets anywhere. The cabinets are just like the ones in this add. A creamish color w/the wood trim on the bottom. Over the years I’ve lost 5 cabinet doors and 5 draws. Can you please help me or guide me in the right direction?
