How To Decorate Your Home Victorian Style
Although the Victorian look is old fashioned it is also sophisticated and still looks great in homes today. Whether you want to do your complete home in Victorian style or you just want to create one Victorian styled room, the look is easy to create and you probably already have some items that can fit into the decor.
The Victorian look came about when Queen Victoria ruled. Decorating the home in a sophisticated look was very important to the social class. It had a rich look to it and it made those who didn’t have a lot of money look like they did. The furniture was very expensive and the accessories were high class as well. Together this created an upscale home decor that was considered the Victorian style.
Now you want to have the Victorian look in your home and that is going to be easy for you to create. Remember, it was about looking sophisticated whether you had money or not. You can create this same look with just a little planning. Here are some tips to help you get the Victorian look.
Walls
The Victorian style walls used vivid colors like ruby, emerald green, and sapphire blue to create the right look. You don’t have to stick to just one color; you can use a combination of colors as long as they are vivid colors. Light shades should be avoided completely in the main rooms of a Victorian style house.

Victorian style living-room with wallpaper
Wallpaper became very popular in the Victorian error. If your room is small then add small patterned wallpaper to your walls. If your rooms are large then consider large patterned wallpaper instead. It’s okay to use floral print wallpaper, or wallpaper with butterflies, birds, or paper fans. You can get almost any Victorian design in a wallpaper but you need to make sure that you have a balanced look when you are done. Wallpaper is not something that you can remove easily.
When you use wallpaper, find a border that will match the wallpaper design. If you have a lot of design in your wallpaper consider adding a solid print border to help create balance in the room.
Flooring
The Victorian design carried on to the floor as well as the walls. Use hardwood flooring whenever possible and compliment the look with oriental rugs. These rugs come in an array of designs, colors, sizes, and shapes so you are bound to find one that you are satisfied with. It’s okay to use more than one oriental rug in the same room. It depends on how large the room is and if you want the room to look divided. This Victorian style looks wonderful in older styled homes where most of the old-fashioned fixtures, including the floors and doors are still in tact and useable. Cotton rugs or other washable rugs are also perfect for the Victorian style.

I lived in a victorian home in Danville, Illinois.
The wallpaper was of roses, 10′ ceilings, 5 fireplaces, three levels, spindle staircase. In my parents bedroom ( was a library), the ceiling had beams that crossed and left square walls in the middle. In back of the house was a summer kitchen. The winter kitchen had a long pantry. There was a door to every room to the outside.
I make and sell finished tatting items.
